After his disastrous flirtation with Nathan, Zeke decided it was best to sleep in town for the night. He said he’d be okay for the night.

Zeke had made himself a home away from home the year before, in a second-floor apartment over a coffee shop. It was perfect for when he wanted to do more advanced scavenging without having to return to the cabin. It was handy now too, when he needed to be alone. Still, he felt like an ass for leaving Nathan to his own devices.

He'd made a big fool of himself, and he needed some time to figure things out. He hadn't ever planned on seeing a living human being again, let alone one he was attracted to. It was as if fate had responded to his loneliness. And then to be rebuffed...

The universe really did hate his guts.

In any case, there was plenty for Nathan to eat in the cabin, and a night alone wouldn't kill him.

Zeke sat on the twin bed in the little apartment, his knees pulled up to his chest, wondering what was so wrong with him. The place was a bit musty, but he'd opened the window just a crack, and the cool air brought the smell of pine trees and snow with it.

After a while staring at the wall, his mind turned to other questions.

How had Nathan survived the plague? Other than himself, it had been one hundred percent fatal as far as he could tell. Then again, in a world of six billion people, there had to be a few who were immune, right? Or at least, who were able to fight it off?

In the end, the virus had been in the air and the water—just about everywhere, if the final reports were to be believed. I must have been exposed at some point. If I was gonna get sick, it would have happened a long time ago. Especially in the weeks immediately after the collapse.

Maybe I'm immune. He'd considered it before.

He'd go back to talk with Nathan in the morning. If Nathan didn't want to be his... boyfriend? Lover? Maybe Zeke could settle for being just friends.

It was far better than being alone.
